Barry Bower, CEO of JD Sports steps down

The chief executive of JD Sports Fashion has announced he is leaving the business. Barry Brown said he will be leaving the Bury firm with immediate effect.

He has worked at JD since 1984 and the retailers said in a stock market statement he had given ‘30 years of significant contribution to the growth and development of the company.’

JD added: “With the leadership role of executive chairman having been in place since 2004, and the considerable development and strengthening of the company’s senior leadership team over the past decade, there will be no immediate replacement of the role of chief executive officer.

Peter Cowgill, executive chairman, said: “The board would like to thank Barry for his valued and considerable contribution to the growth and progress of the business. We look forward to his continued support as a consultant to the company.”

Mr Brown has insisted there has been no falling out between him and his former colleagues and has played down talk he could move to Sports Direct.

It is reported he will be paid a full year’s salary of £318,000.
