Exeter City have stripped Danny Coles of the club captaincy and put him on the transfer list following comments he made towards a fan on Twitter.

Coles, 32, posted a message using a number of expletives in June, during England's 2-1 World Cup defeat to Uruguay.

The defender apologised, but after a disciplinary hearing by the club on Monday, he has been fined two weeks wages, stripped of the captaincy and transfer listed.

In a statement released by the club they said, "Exeter City would like to extend its apologies to all those who were offended by Danny Coles' behaviour."

"At the hearing, Coles again apologised for any offence taken by his comments and has written a letter of apology to the young person concerned."

"Exeter City Football Club and Coles will now be focusing on pre-season training and the year ahead and will make no further comment on the matter."

Coles tweeted: "(England defender Phil) Jagielka is a car crash waiting to happen", during England's 2-1 defeat, to which a fan replied "so like you for Exeter".

Coles response to that tweet, which was filled with expletive language, was ultimately what got him into trouble.

It is believed he has only a year left on his current contract, but the club will be looking to upload him this summer.
