Cumbrian company Support in Sport lay new pitch at theBernabea for Spanish giants Barcelona

Support in Sport re-turfed Barcelona's famous Camp Nou stadium.

The work, which took place in September,  involved installation of undersoil heating to keep the surface between 6C and 13C, the optimum for grass growth and maintenance. This job follows the laying of new pitches at the Catalans' training ground.

And it provided the natural turf pitch at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium of Barcelona’s arch rival Real Madrid.

The Maryport factory makes synthetic pitches while natural turf comes from turf farms in Europe and the United Arab Emirates.

It is installing a fibre sand polo pitch at Buta Palace in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, and has a contract for full-size natural and synthetic pitches for FC Gabala, also in Azerbaijan.

Marketing manager Lucy Graham said: “We are starting to do more work in the former Soviet Union and we’re doing quite a lot in the Middle East, especially around Dubai."

“Qatar having the World Cup in 2022 has stimulated interest over there. There are a lot of opportunities.”

Support in Sport provided pitches for the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola in 2010.

Support in Sport has offices in Ireland, Holland, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Angola.

The 2008 UEFA Champions League final in Moscow, between Manchester United and Chelsea, was played on a Support in Sport pitch.
