Manchester United sign new Australian partner

The Seven Network has acquired the broadcast rights to Manchester United and Liverpool’s pre-season exhibition matches in Australia.

The deal was struck between the Football Federation of Australia (FFA) and Seven West Media, the owners of the Seven Network. The Australian Financial Review reports that the FFA were seeking AUS$2 million (US$1.93 million) for the matches, however, according to The Australian, Seven paid closer for AUS$1 million (US$965,900) for the two-game package.

The Foxtel A-League All Stars will face Premier League champions Manchester United at the ANZ Stadium in Sydney on 20th July while Liverpool will play Melbourne Victory at the
100,000-seater Melbourne Cricket Ground on 24th July and Seven Network has acquired the broadcast rights for a reported AUS$1 million.

FFA chief executive David Gallop said: “These are huge events on the sporting calendar and we’re delighted Seven will be our partner in bringing top-class football action to all Australians on free to air television. Manchester United and Liverpool have millions of followers in Australia, but just as many fans will get behind the All Stars and Victory as they showcase the A-League on the world stage.”

Commenting, Tim Worner, the chief executive of the Seven Network, added: “Manchester United and Liverpool are two of the biggest brands in world sport and we are really pleased to be delivering their matches live to Australians everywhere and on every device. These are going to be huge events. They sold out straight away and we expect a big audience to be engaged before, during and after the games.”
