Roy Hodgson surprises England followers with call-ups

England boss Roy Hodgson gave a pointer to the future with three late call-ups to the squad to face Ukraine at Wembley this week.

With Daniel Sturridge and Theo Walcott ill, and John Terry and Ashley Cole injured Hodgson has given three relative unknowns an opportunity. Whilst admitting none is likley to start it demonstrates that youth will be the order of the day going forwards.

Liverpool youngster, Raheem Sterling has been called up. The 17-year-old has been selected despite making only eight appearances for Liverpool's first team and starting the last two Barclays Premier League games against Manchester City and Arsenal. If Sterling figures against the Ukrainians, he'll become Liverpool's youngest-ever England international.
The winger was in action for England U19s in their 3-1 defeat to Germany last Thursday and impressed enormously.

Also in the firing line is Southampton's Adam Lallana who  thought Southampton manager Nigel Adkins was joking when he told the midfielder about his England call-up.

"I didn't think the gaffer was being serious when he called to tell me this morning," Lallana told Southampton's official website.
"I was at home about to head into the training ground when he called - I must have asked if he was having me on a dozen times!
"I'm totally shocked to be honest."
Lallana was named as Southampton skipper this summer and has represented England at Under-18, Under-19 and Under-21 levels.
The versatile midfielder is well aware that he is unlikely to make his senior debut but is thrilled just to get the chance to link up with the senior squad.
"It's such a proud accomplishment to be called up to play for your country at any level, but to be called into the senior side is probably the proudest moment of my career so far," added.
The other player to join the party is a relative 'old boy' with one cap already - Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jake Livermore.played in the 2-1 friendly win over Italy last month.
