A total of 16,695 people watched Pompey’s goalless draw with Bristol City
Fans were encouraged to donate money to buy tickets for friends, or to be given to local charities, if they couldn’t attend the game.
The generosity of fans was overshadowed on Saturday night however with the story that Bolton midfielder Fabrice Muamba who collapsed on the pitch in their game against Tottenham and was rushed to hospital in a critical condition.
Now the dust has settled on that traumatic event it is worth reporting that Portsmouth fans are not alone in their struggle to keep their club afloat.
Scott Mclachlan, spokesman for Pompey Supporters Trust, said: ‘It was nice that people made the effort. It shows that other fans of other clubs can support clubs when they get into trouble.
‘It shows that it’s not all about the money. It’s about people going to watch football matches and enjoying it as a sport.’
