Margate FC launch Thanet Football Academy

A new academy for Thanet’s soccer players has been launched. The partnership between Margate Football Club and Hartsdown Academy will offer first class training and coaching plus the opportunity to take the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport.

Thanet Football Academy is a split site project with bases at the club’s Hartsdown Park stadium and the nearby college campus.

It is open to footballers aged between 16 and 19, and a special open day for more information is being held at the club by Head of Football in the Community, Wayne Wilson, on 16th July from 10am.

Margate Football Club CEO Cliff Egan said: “This is a terrific partnership. It will give young players the best opportunity to develop their footballing skills alongside relevant educational qualifications.

“Thanet Football Academy is another strong part of the ongoing development of this club.”

“It is the first time Thanet has had a proper soccer academy and the club and Hartsdown Academy are proud to be able to make this happen for our young people.

“The idea is to see these players make it through to the 18s, reserves and maybe even the first team squad.

“Who knows, we may unearth a real gem.”

Hartsdown Principal Andy Somers said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for young footballers from around the whole of Thanet, not just Margate.

“There are some very talented young players in and around the district, and the Thanet Football Academy is the ideal chance for them to learn and develop their soccer and their education in tandem. The courses available are just perfect for this project.

“We pride ourselves on our community projects - together with Margate FC we are a great pioneering team for Thanet.”

Wayne Wilson said: “Both the college and the club have excellent facilities for sport and learning. This is just what our young people need.”

The courses will be open to 20 players and will officially start in September.
