Manchester United must search for world class keeper

The foundation on which Manchester United's success over the last decade has been based on a world class keeper firstly Peter Schmeichel and then Edwin van der Sar.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson backed goalkeeper David de Gea despite the 2-1 FA Cup fourth-round defeat by Liverpool at Anfield. De Gea, recalled in place of Anders Lindegaard for the Liverpool game, hesitated to claim Steven Gerrard's first-half corner, allowing Daniel Agger to head into an unguarded net.

Maybe the new messiah de Gea should take a leaf out of Schmeichel book and although the Old Trafford Legend hasn't signed with Heineken that "refreshes the parts other beers cannot reach" he has opted for another lager.

The Danish goalkeeper has signed a deal with Carlsberg that will see him represent the Danish beer brand throughout the Euro 2012 campaign.

Commenting on the deal, Carlsberg Group's president and chief executive Jorgen Buhl Rasmussen said.

"Not only has Peter played much of his football in our two biggest Carlsberg markets - Denmark and the UK ā€“ but he is a well-known personality across Carlsberg's key markets in all of Europe and Asia.  We are confident that Peter will help us to deliver another very successful Uefa Euro campaign."

ā€œIā€™m delighted to be an ambassador for Carlsberg, who have such a strong connection to European football," added Schmeichel.
"I believe that Carlsberg is one of the reasons that I got the chance to play football. When I was growing up, I dreamt about playing for both my national team, Denmark, and for Manchester United. At that time, in the 1970s, Carlsberg had already started investing in and supporting Danish football and this provided opportunities for people like myself to get more involved in this wonderful game."

Schmeichel played 292 times for Manchester United in the 1990s and while all keepers have an offday Sir Alex very rarely gets in wrong and de Gea will prove his worth as his confidence grows.
