Champions League: Celtic and Chelsea look to join United and Arsenal in knockout stages, but both need results

The varying fortunes of Britain's teams in the Champions League will come to a head last night, with potentially only two of the five teams making it through to the knock out stages.

Last night saw City finish bottom of their group after losing to Dortmund, meaning they will not even drop into the Europa league after Christmas, where as Arsenal could afford to lose 2-1 at Olympiacos last night having alreaady garunteed their spot in the next round, although they finished second in their group.

With one team in and one out already, Machester United are the only side garunteed to go through no matter what tonight, and they will also finish top of the group no less. They play Cluj tonight, with several stars rested, although Wayne Rooney will be risked as Ales Ferguson looks to get him in a good vein of form for the Manchester derby this weekend.

For Chelsea and Celtic it is a different matter however. Chelsea need to hope Shakhtar Donnesk can beat Juventus, and that they themselves can beat group minnows Nordsjaelland at Stamford Bridge, which given their current form will by no means be a sure thing.

Celtic find themselves in a similar position, needing to get a better result against bottom side Spartak Moscow than Benfica do against group winners Barcelona in order to qualify after a historic campaign for the Hoops.

There are only actually three places left for the knockout stages left, with thirteen already filled either finalised last night or already taken  by teams before tonight's games.

Here's a look at who is definitely through, and what position they finished, and who still has a chance tonight.

Qualified: PSG (1) Porto (2) Schalke (1) Arsenal (2) Malaga (1) AC Milan (2) Borussia Dortmund (1) Real Madrid (2) Shakhtar Donnesk (TBC) Bayern Munich (TBC) Valencia (TBC) Barcelona (1) Manchester United (1)

Could still qualify: Group E: Juventus or Chelsea, Group G: Benfica or Celtic, Group H: Galatasaray or CFR Cluj
