Manchester City and Manchester United eye further business before 11 pm deadline

Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini hopes to have five new players in before the 11pm transfer deadline. While Tottenham midfielder Rafael van der Vaart is travelling to former club Hamburg to undergo a medical as Sir Alex Ferguson has raised the possibility of record signing Dimitar Berbatov returning to White Hart Lane?

van der Vaart, Netherlands international is on his way to the German club for a fee of around £10.5m.

Berbatov has been in talks with Fulham and underwent a medical at Craven Cottage on Thursday after turning down moves to Fiorentina and Juventus

The most recent out going from Manchester City is Nigel de Jong who has joined AC Milan.

The Netherlands midfielder, 27, was in the final year of his contract at City and statement on AC Milan's official website said:

"He is an important signing for the team - De Jong is an established international,"

Mancini said: "I am sorry because Nigel was an important player for us but if he is happy, I am happy for him.

City are also looking to complete three more signings, deals for Scott Sinclair and Richard Wright are already in place, but they are also hoping to conclude moves for Maicon from Inter Milan, Matija Nastasic of Fiorentina and Benfica's Javi Garcia.

Brazil's Maicon, 31, is available for around £5m and boss Mancini wants him as cover for Pablo Zabaleta.

The £24m-rated Garcia has become a possible new target after Mancini's main midfield target, Daniele de Rossi, decided to stay at Roma.
