JD Sports have given an update on trading for the 9 weeks to 31 March. In the UK and Ireland on core activities the company achieved net like for like sales of +1.2%, with sports fascia’s +1.0% and fashion fascia’s +2.3%.
Given the current climate with high levels of youth unemployment these numbers clearly buck the retail trend.
Despite money being tight and confidence low, young people are still prepared to spend money on looking good, even if that means cutting back elsewhere. JD Sports marketing team have to be commended by upping their promotional activity to make customers feel like they are getting a bargain.
