It makes a change to see local brewery on club shirts

Football News 24/7
Once in the day, not so long ago, teams were regularly sponsored by a home town brewery. But this is an industry where even the 'Pride of Manchester ' - Boddingtons is now brewed in South Wales and the iconic brewery in Strangeways is a car park. Newcastle fans will cry in their 'Brown Ale' (now brewed in Yorkshire by John Smiths) - not just because it is really no longer Newcastle Brown Ale - but because their iconic brewery off Gallowgate and within chucking out distance of the ground is now a huge building site. Even its replacement - the old Federation Brewery in Gateshead has closed and is for sale.

Look back in the archives and brews like Barnsley Bitter, OB (Oldham Breweries), Vaux (Sunderland), Mansfield , etc etc were linked to the local team. That tradition is hard to find in the professional game now, with the 'Big' multi-nationals forming pouring rights deals with the clubs to build brand awareness across the UK. Foreign brewers from across the globe have now joined the party.

So it is very refreshing to see that a small club like Ossett Albion can buck the trend by signing a major sponsorship deal with a local town brewery -Ossett Brewing Company. The deal will see the Ossett Brewery logo being worn on first team shirts throughout the current season. It will come as a big boost for many Yorkshire men who have seen their beloved Tetley Brewer a shadow of its fomer self.

The Ossett brewery owns several pubs in the West Yorkshire area two of which are in Ossett itself. Many home and travelling supporters call in at The Tap on the Green before and after Albion matches, and the pub is well known on the Non League Football forums.

Brewery spokesman Mike Inman said β€œ. We are a local company who are active in the local community. We are proud to support Ossett Albion and hope our relationship can develop over the coming years.”

The Tap will become the Official Supporters Pub of Ossett Albion and a warm welcome will be given to home and travelling supporters by pub landlady Alison Dean.

Albion Chairman Stephen Hanks said. β€œIn these difficult financial times sponsorship has become all the more important to local sporting organizations and we at Ossett Albion are no different. Our new partnership with Ossett Brewery is extremely welcome and very much appreciated. Additionally we are all the more pleased that the sponsorship deal is with a local company as we look to develop our own community links. Hopefully the association will prove beneficial to both parties and we, for our part, will be striving hard to fulfil our obligations with our new partners.
