Solar power to save Barnsley FC thousands

Barnsley Football Club is set to become the first side in the country to be powered by solar energy in a move that will half its energy bill.

The project, which will cost over £1m, has been funded by installation company Solar Europa Limited which will recoup any money made selling electricity back to the National Grid.

Barnsley’s general manager Don Rowing said: "With energy costs spiralling and likely to continue that way it makes business sense to use the large amount of roof surface available to us in order to save the club money and also to reduce our carbon footprint."

Photovoltaic panels on the roofs of two stands and the external wall of the south stand at Oakwell will be completed in June and generate around 0.5 megawatts of electricity.
