Belper Town Football Club chairman Phil Varney will step down from his role at the Evo Stik League side at the end of the season.
Varney has been with Belper since 1988 after former chairman John Greenham passed away and has overseen improvements at the club’s Christchurch Meadow ground, including a new main stand. He is set to continue as a director and groundsman.
"I’ve given this decision a lot of consideration in recent months," Varney said.
He added: "Whilst I’ve been pleased with the continued stadium improvements, I feel that we have not matched this with progress on the field by securing promotion though the non-league system.
"We should certainly be competing at a much higher level than that in which we are currently placed and I feel that this would be possible through the appointment of a chairman with the necessary skills, time and passion to drive the club forward."
Varney outlined his hopes for the club in the near future: "The main focus for the future has to be in securing promotion and the new chairman will have to work closely with the management team to make this reality."
Belper hope to announce a new chairman within the next month.
