Ashford Town FC to change club's name

Ashford Town Football Club has announced it is to change its name in time for the start of next season.

The club, who are currently without a league after being suspended from the Ryman League by the Football Association due to debts to other clubs, have yet to confirm a new name but said the club’s current name is ‘too similar to the old Ashford Town’.

Commenting on the decision owner Tony Betteridge said: "Things have been progressing really well. We’ve got a group of people enthusiastic about Ashford football in our committee and have been working our socks off to get things sorted for next season.

"We have to change the name Ashford Town (Kent) as it’s too similar to the old Ashford Town. With a new name in place things should start to pick up and hopefully we’ll have more news to announce soon, including the new name of the club, once we’ve decided it!"

Chairman Ernie Warren added: "It’s very exciting times for this club and the name change is just one of them. We want a club that Ashford can be proud of and this is just another step on the road to playing football next season."

Ashford Town (Middlesex) FC share the Kent club’s name and currently play in the Southern Football League Division One Central.
