A floodlight failure just after half-time saw the game abandoned after some confusion. The floodlights flickered during the first half and the Aldershot electrician was called for over the loudspeaker system at the interval. Confusion then followed after a series of contradictory announcements.
Fans and players were told several times the match would be restarted and also that it was to be called off.
The players came out on to the pitch before it was confirmed the match would not continue.
"The players are all gutted about it," said Southend manager Paul Sturrock.
"We just have to take it on the chin because we can't do anything else about it."
A Liam Dickinson penalty put them 1-0 up and Aldershot had Darren Jones sent off for a swinging arm.
The game will have to be re-arranged for a later date. Not surprisngley, there have been fewer complaints from home fans than those of the away side given the situation.
