Watford confirms takeover discussions

Watford Football Club’s majority shareholder, Lord Ashcroft has had discussions with a potential buyer regarding selling his stake in the Championship club.

An official statement from the board, made in response to recent media speculation, was quick to insist that talks were in ‘very early stages’ and that there is still ‘no certainty’ an offer will be made.

Ashcroft’s company Fordwat owns just over 37% of the club's shares.

In December 2009 a £4.88million payment from the tycoon saved The Hornets from administration.
