Macclesfield Town Football Club has seen plans for a new stadium move a step closer after Cheshire East Cabinet approved regeneration plans for the town.
Under the plans the development will include a mixture of retail, residential and leisure use anchored by a new stadium for the Npower League Two side.
Speaking to the club’s official site chairman Mike Rance said: "The proximity of the soon to be capped landfill site to the development represents a real opportunity for us.
“With the incorporation of sustainable energy sources at the design stage we can break new ground by creating the first low carbon stadium in the UK which would be real achievement for the club.
"The council endorsement of the proposal is a massive stepping stone in the achievement of a sustainable future for the club but it's just the end of the beginning for both the football club and for the wider community.
"The challenge is now to put in the hard work that will be necessary to convert the vision into an economically viable reality."
